Petition Deadline is Now History

Well, the deadline to run for office is history and, no, I’m not a candidate. Serving in office was a great experience but I feel at this chapter of my life I can better serve my region and state through my writing and by telling the stories of the people who lived the history of the state. I certainly won’t miss being wrapped up in the election process, a book in its own.

There is no doubt this is going to be an interesting race in Orleans 1. For years I have enjoyed trying to pick the winners of a race. I can boast my predictions are usually pretty accurate. However, I wouldn’t bet on who is going to win this race. I predict Rep. Bob Lewis will walk back into office, but who will fill my seat? That is more difficult. At the beginning of the race I would have easily predicted my friend and co-worker, Lisa Erwin Davidson, to be headed to the State House. Although I think she has a good chance I think another friend and neighbor, Patrick Martell (yes, three friends running for two seats), a conservative Republican, will make for an interesting, and very possibly a strong candidate but he’ll have to survive a primary that will pit him against Lynn Batchelder (who I know little about) and Rep. Lewis. Only two will survive. Neither do I know the Independent candidate - I believe a Rick Gonyaw? As for Frank Davis - I don’t think he’ll play much of a role in this race.

Once the primary is over in over August I’ll have a far better prediction of who will serve us. With that said and done, whoever the winners, I am confident that they will serve our district well.
